    Dear Friend,

Working families across Washington are about to lose their lifeline: Their child care. Governor Chris Gregoire is proposing to cut $14.78 million in child care funding. These cuts could leave thousands of parents without child care - in a time when many families are already stretched to the limit.

Join me and tell the Washington Department of Early Learning not to allow cuts to this critical funding. Together, we'll make sure they know just how important child care is to working families:

The average cost for center-based care for a four-year-old in Washington state is more than the average cost of tuition at a public universities. Child care is simply out of reach for many working parents. But as we all know, it's affordable, quality child care allows parents to make ends meet.

Parents all over the state count on the Working Connections Child Care program to help them cover the high cost of child care so they can go to work or job training. But the proposed cuts would mean that a family of three with income over $2,671 per month or about $32,000 per year would no longer be eligible for Working Connections.

Child poverty is skyrocketing in Washington State right now: 15.8% of all Washington kids are living in poverty. And the poverty rate is even higher among Latino children (24.8 percent), Native American children(24.4 percent), and African American children (24.3 percent). A cut to WCCC will increase the number of children living in poverty.

When it comes to Washington's children and families, it's time to get back to basics. That means protecting the health and safety of our kids. America should be at the top of the list of industrialized nations at the health and safety of its children, not at the bottom. It's time we get families working again. Our children are our future, it doesn't get any more basic than that.

    Together we are powerful.
