Dear Legislator,
As your constituent and a member of MomsRising, I’m writing to urge you to support paid family and medical leave for Connecticut families.
S.B. 1 and H.B. 6212, An Act Establishing Paid Family and Medical Leave, is affordable for Connecticut workers and businesses, accessible to all working people, inclusive when it comes to defining family, and offers a meaningful length of time, 12 weeks, for care and healing. The paid family and medical leave proposal is fully funded through an insurance-style program that lifts the financial burden off businesses.
Only 14% of workers--and only 5% of low-wage of workers-- in the United States have access to paid leave through their employers. This means that nearly 1 in 4 mothers return to work within 10 days of giving birth and 1 in 4 retirees leave the workforce earlier than planned to care for an ill spouse or other family member. Many families end up cobbling together vacation time and sick days to cover time away from work for caregiving and then cross their fingers that nothing goes wrong.
I think you will agree that whether it’s to care for a newborn you swear already smiles, a mom who is ill, or a spouse battling cancer, being there for family is what matters. Connecticut families shouldn't have to give up a paycheck to do it.
Please support the paid family leave bill this session and do everything in your power to make sure the bill becomes a reality for Connecticut families.
Thank you,
