Dear U.S. Senators,
We need you to vote NO on the Workplace Advancement Act (S.2200) otherwise known as the Fake Fair Pay bill. The fake fair pay bill harms working people because it would allow your employer to fire you for casual water cooler conversations about pay with coworkers--even though these sorts of conversations are how pay discrimination is often accidentally discovered. The bill does nothing to close loopholes in existing law that allows employers to pay discriminatory wages. The fake fair pay bill has no penalties for employers and it does NOT guarantee fair compensation for women who've been victims of pay discrimination.
The women's wage gap in the United States is a real problem, with real consequences, and it requires real solutions to fix it. So, rather than advancing a bill that won't work, we need the U.S. Senate to focus on real solutions like passing the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 862). The Paycheck Fairness Act would prohibit employers from retaliating against workers who discuss salaries with colleagues and requires employers to prove that pay differences exist for legitimate, job-related reasons.
This is important because when women are ripped off and don’t get equal pay, our families suffer and our economy suffers too. Raising women’s incomes to parity would boost our economy and save taxpayer funds by lowering the need for government programs and by putting money directly into our consumer-fueled economy.
Please do everything in your power to shut down the fake fair pay bill and instead pass the Paycheck Fairness Act.
Thanks for all you do,
