Medicaid is a critical support for more than 70 million families, especially those of us who come from communities of color, are caring for children, have aging parents, or have family members with disabilities. Instead of providing support to struggling families when they need it most, proposals to cut funding for Medicaid and make major changes to the program creates barriers for families trying to care for sick loved ones and avoid medical debt.

These impacts would be particularly severe for women of color and women in rural areas. In fact, Medicaid has long played an even larger role in providing health coverage and paying for care in rural areas than in urban areas. Nearly 1.7 million rural Americans have newly gained coverage through the Medicaid expansion, many of them women.

Dear Member of Congress,

As one of the one million strong MomsRising members, I am deeply concerned with recent Congressional proposals to make very harmful cuts and changes to Medicaid, one of our nation’s most treasured and successful healthcare programs. I strongly urge you to protect the successful design of the Medicaid program and reject proposals, including block granting Medicaid, super waivers and adopting per capita cap legislation, that would reduce the affordable, quality, and efficient health care that keeps our families healthy and productive.

For moms and dads in the sandwich generation, Medicaid is a vital program to ensure that we can both work and care for our children, aging parents, and family members with disabilities. Medicaid boosts families throughout the life process: half of all births and 70% of all nursing home residents use Medicaid.

Medicaid is a boost to our families and our economy. A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that investments in Medicaid strengthen our economy because children who are covered by Medicaid insurance receive a boost in their future earnings for decades, and in return pay more taxes and pump more money back into their local economies.

All of our families benefit from a strong Medicaid program. It’s important that we keep Medicaid strong so that it’s there for any of us in a time of need. Please stand with me in protecting it.
