Dear members of Congress,
We commend the historic action taken by members of the House to pass the Build Back Better Act (BBBA). This is indeed a victory for moms, parents, caregivers, businesses and our economy -- and now it is time for the Senate to deliver too, by also passing Build Back Better this year with paid family/medical leave.
The BBB Act would not only lift families, it would also allow more people to productively participate in the economy, and curb worker shortages, which will reduce inflation. Specifically, the paid family/medical leave provision is not only one of the highest polling provisions; it also significantly boosts the economy, public health, families, and increases labor force attachment. This policy makes it so women and caregivers are no longer pushed out of much-needed jobs when a serious health crisis strikes or a new baby arrives. It also takes the burden of paying for the time off for critical leave off of businesses alone, increases job retention, and saves taxpayer dollars in other programs like SNAP and TANF.
All told, the BBB creates good paying jobs and ensures more workers can remain in the labor force, delivers two years of free preschool for young children, provides a tax cut to families by expanding the Child Tax Credit, expands much needed access for home and community-based services for older people and those with disabilities, permanent protections for immigrants and, importantly, provides much needed and lauded paid family and medical leave to all workers. Finally, we know that investing in the care infrastructure boosts the economy by increasing our nation’s long term GDP growth by 10-15 basis points.
Its provisions, when taken together, promise to lower costs for working families, tackle inflation, help address systemic inequalities, and boost businesses and our economy.
The country urgently needs you to pass the BBB Act immediately.
Thank you,
