Dear Legislator,
As your constituent and a member of MomsRising, I’m writing to urge you to co-sponsor and support paid family and medical leave for Oregon families.
HB 3087, the Family and Medical Leave Insurance Act (FAMLI), would allow Oregon workers to take job-protected leave and provide wage replacement after the arrival of new child or to provide care to ill family member or to recover from their serious health condition.
Only 14% of workers--and only 5% of low-wage of workers-- in the United States have access to paid leave through their employers. This means that nearly 1 in 4 mothers return to work within 10 days of giving birth and 1 in 4 retirees leave the workforce earlier than planned to care for an ill spouse or other family member. Many families end up cobbling together vacation time and sick days to cover time away from work for caregiving and then cross their fingers that nothing goes wrong.
I think you will agree that whether it’s to care for a newborn you swear already smiles, a mom who is ill, or a spouse battling cancer, being there for family is what matters. Oregon families shouldn't have to give up a paycheck to do it.
Please support the paid family leave bill this session and do everything in your power to make sure the bill becomes a reality for Oregon families.
Thank you,
