Dear Member of Congress,

As your constituent and a member of MomsRising, I urge you to support the Healthy Families Act (H.R. 1876, S. 984).

The common sense, family-friendly Healthy Families Act would set an important national standard for earned sick days. Its passage would be a critical step toward meeting the health and financial needs of working families.

There is overwhelming public support for earned sick days. The majority of both Republicans and Democrats support earned sick days. When you think about it, it is hardly surprising. We ALL get sick. When we’re worried about our kids’ health or our own health, we shouldn’t also have to worry if we can pay the rent or if we’ll still have a job, when we get better.

Please do everything in your power to support and pass the Healthy Families Act.

Sincerely,

    Time flies
    Dear friend,

Time flies. It's already back-to-school time and, somehow (how?!?!) our kids are a year older.

And while kids grow up in the blink of an eye, it doesn't mean you stop worrying about them. I want my kids to get the most out of school--and with flu season right around the corner, it's critically important that everyone has access to earned sick days so the flu and other illnesses don't spread like wildfire and kids can stay in school.

To be blunt: Time flies, but not when you have the flu.

We have a problem to solve. Nearly 40% of the private sector workforce, and nearly 80% of low wage workers, don't have access to a single earned sick day. [1] Together we can change this and make our communities, schools, and kids healthier.

Why are earned sick days so critical?

When people aren't allowed to earn sick days, they often have to choose between going to work sick, and losing a day’s pay (and possibly their jobs) if they stay home sick or with sick kids.

This is a big problem – when sick folks aren’t able to stay home, it puts everyone’s health at risk – co-workers, restaurant patrons, school kids, and, well, everyone. Allowing workers with contagious diseases to avoid unnecessary contact with co-workers and customers is a fundamental public health measure. Our laws are clearly out of sync with responsible public health practices.

Earned sick days are good for working families, for public health, and for businesses. Earned sick days would help contain health care costs through prevention, early detection, and treatment of illness. With earned sick days, families will not be forced to send sick children to school where they will likely infect classmates and teachers. Also, workers with earned sick days would not spread illness to their co-workers and customers.

*Please forward this email to your friends and family so they can take action too.

Together we’re a powerful voice for women and families.

PS: The National Partnership for Women and Families has put together an excellent back-to-school tool kit that parents can help parents talk to their elected officals and write letters to the editor about the importance of paid sick days.
