Dear Secretary Nielsen:
As mothers, fathers, and people who care about children, we urge you to stand with children and families and strike down a proposed DHS policy that would separate migrant children from their parents at the border. This is an inhumane, cruel and unnecessary policy that will cause more trauma to already traumatized children and families seeking refuge in the U.S.
Separation could also bring our current care system into chaos. The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) is the entity in charge of custody of unaccompanied children, a sudden increase in thousands of children and now toddlers and babies, would overburden the system and it’s shelters. Moreover, communication channels between ORR and DHS are lacking. As they stand today, they cannot guarantee parents could maintain contact with their children, especially if parents are held in detention centers.
Separating families would violate the rule of law, cause unnecessary trauma to families, overburden our current government systems and ultimately lead to more financial cost.
Moreover, there are numerous studies showing that this policy will not deter families when they are fighting for their lives as they seek refuge in neighboring countries.
As mothers and fathers, we can not imagine a crueler fate than to have our children ripped from our arms and taken away. This proposed policy does not reflect the values of America. This is not how we treat children, ever. We expect our government to uphold at least the most basic standards of decency and humanity. We demand that Secretary Nielsen take immediate action to stop this immoral, cruel, and shocking policy from being implemented.
Sincerely,
