Paid sick days could soon become a reality for New Yorkers! 39 out of 51 City Council members have signed on in support of the bill to establish paid sick days in NYC. This legislation can be passed if it is brought to a vote, so send a letter now urging Speaker Quinn to pass paid sick days this year!

Dear Speaker Quinn,

As a member of MomsRising in NYC, I am urging you to pass the paid sick time ordinance this year. MomsRising is a grassroots advocacy organization with over a million members nationwide and 13,000 in NYC that is working to build a nation where children, parents, and businesses thrive; and to end discrimination against mothers. MomsRising members feel strongly that all workers should be able to earn paid sick time in order to care for themselves or their children when illness strikes. Paid sick time is good for workers and essential to public health.

This flu season -- with H1N1 on top of the seasonal flu -- has hit workers hard. Workers want to do the right thing and heed the advice of the CDC and others to stay home when sick, but without any paid sick time, many workers simply cannot afford to lose a day's pay. A recent NY Times article reported on the frightening number of people who are showing up for work despite their illness. (http://bit.ly/1ukUpa)

Over a million workers in New York City do not have paid sick time at their job to deal with their own or their family's health needs or to address domestic violence issues. The paid sick time bill makes it possible for virtually every worker in New York City to take time off from work when they or a family member are ill without being penalized.

Hard-working families deserve the right to earn paid sick time, and that's why we're urging you to pass the paid sick time bill this year.
