50 years is too long to wait for fair pay! We need paycheck fairness now!

Even though the Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963, the pay gap has been narrowing by less than half a percent a year. That means at this rate the pay gap won’t close until 2057 - nearly 50 years from now!

America can't afford to wait that long! Now that more and more families are relying on the paychecks of mothers, equal pay for equal work is more important than ever. Not a moment too soon, the Paycheck Fairness bill is finally gaining momentum.

Help increase the pressure to keep Paycheck Fairness on the front burner! It's easy. Just take 30 seconds to send the letter below to your Senators urging them to vote for the Paycheck Fairness Act in November.

AND don't forget to vote by Tuesday, November 2.

Dear Senator,

As your constituent and member of MomsRising, I urge you to vote YES on the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 182) and move as quickly as possible to pass this Act when Congress resumes work in November.

The Paycheck Fairness Act, which was passed by the House in January 2009, would deter wage discrimination by closing loopholes in the Equal Pay Act and bar retaliation against workers who disclose their wages. The bill also allows women and men to receive the same remedies for sex-based pay discrimination that are currently available to those who are discriminated against based on race and national origin.
 
Things aren't looking up for women's paychecks now--and the wages of women who are mothers are particularly impacted.  On average, women working full-time, year-round make an average of 77 cents to every dollar that men make. Women who are mothers make even less - only 73 cents to a man's dollar, and single mothers make the least at about 60 cents to a man's dollar.  Women of color experience even more wage hits. 
 
Further, a recent study found that with equal resumes and job experiences, mothers were offered $11,000 lower starting salaries (fathers, on the other hand, were offered $6,000  more in starting salaries than non-fathers).

Since over 80% of women in our nation have children by the time they're 44 years old, this means the majority of women in our nation are touched by this type of wage discrimination at some point in their lives.

Even so, paycheck fairness is not just a woman’s issue. The majority of families these days need the wages of two parents to make ends meet, and getting equal pay for equal work would go a long way toward helping family economic security and putting the nation on the road to economic recovery.
 
Again, I urge you to vote to approve the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 182) when it comes to the floor right after the elections and to oppose any weakening amendments.
