You know how to juggle a holiday budget
    Dear Friend,

Santa’s not the only one making his list and checking it twice this time of year! With a tight holiday budget, I know I've got to prioritize my list and think a little pragmatically and creatively.

As parents, we know too well how to juggle a holiday budget to make sure the important things are covered. This is a skill we've got to share with North Carolina legislators!

Right now, Governor Perdue needs our parental-holiday-making-skills. Gov. Perdue is proposing slashing proven programs for kids -- she's not checking her list twice. It’s critical that we let her know NOW that these cuts are unacceptable and that we must take a balanced, pragmatic approach to the state budget that includes new revenue.

Tell Governor Perdue that she's got to check her list twice!

Here are a few of the proposed cuts:

    * Eliminate over 5,000 teacher positions and 75% of teachers' assistants - this would mean larger class sizes for ALL children in North Carolina public schools.

    * Remove school nurses from over 200 schools across the state.

    * Cut $28 million from the Smart Start early education program, which ensures that ALL children in NC have access to high-quality early childhood care.

    * Eliminate over $5 million in funding for local social service agencies, which are responsible for identifying and caring for children who are victims of abuse and neglect.

The list could go on. On the bright side, our future doesn't have to look like this.

Like parents across the state prioritizing their holiday lists, Governor Perdue needs to prioritize what’s most important. And what ultimately ends up on that list should meet the same criteria parents use for selecting a good toy for their kids: The toy should be durable, have proven lasting power with kids, and help them grow and learn as they play. Our state's budget should pass the parent-toy-test: It should be durable, proven, and help our state grow and build for the future.

Together we are a powerful voice for families,
