Today our Washington State Legislature is voting on Washington kids, literally.

This week both the State Senate and the State House will vote on WaKIDS, an innovative pilot program that brings together parents, preschool teachers, and kindergarten teachers before the first day of school to help ease the transition into school and give kindergarten teachers the information they need to help kids succeed.

The WaKIDS pilot was so successful at creating a great starting point for kids, families and teachers that we’ve got to roll this pilot out across the state. Everyone deserves a great start!

WaKIDS is unique and helps maximize our current investments in early learning and kindergarten. It is the only kindergarten transition process in the country to include three fundamental components that:

1. Empower families by arranging a teacher-family meeting for every child entering kindergarten. Parents have a chance to share their child’s likes and dislikes, struggles and strengths. Teachers have a chance to learn about every family entering their classroom.

2. Breaks down the wall between early learning and kindergarten. WA KIDS connects early learning providers (child care and preschool teachers) with kindergarten teachers so they can share information about each child entering kindergarten.

3. Provides a snapshot of Washington students entering kindergarten through an assessment of how children perform in four key areas of development (social/emotional; literacy; cognitive; physical). This information can help us identify problems and stop the achievement gap before it starts.

As one of the over 40,000 members of MomsRising in our state and as your constituent, I'm writing to urge you to support SB 5427 and HB 1510, the WaKIDS legislation.

WaKIDS is a unique and cost-effective program that helps maximize our current investments in early learning and kindergarten. It is the only kindergarten transition process in the country to include three fundamental components that:

1. Empower families by arranging a teacher-family meeting for every child entering kindergarten. Parents have a chance to share their child’s likes and dislikes, struggles and strengths.  Teachers have a chance to learn about every family entering their classroom.

Every child in Washington deserves a great start.  By rolling out WaKIDS across Washington, we can get a better understanding about how critical it is improve affordable, quality early learning opportunities in Washington state. WaKIDS will build a network of parent and teacher support for our children before school even begins. A strong support foundation can ensure that Washington children will soar in the new economy.
