Tell the Budget Conference Committee to Protect Kids and Families in the Budget

If we want our children and families to have a bright future, we need to stand up and hold our nation’s leaders accountable for the state of our country’s families. We must insist on a national budget that doesn’t just enrich big business and billionaires, but creates ladders of opportunities for our children and families.

Big decisions are about to be made. The voices of America’s moms and dads must be heard in the halls of Congress.

Sign on to the letter on the right and tell them to “Protect children and families in the budget, end the harmful automatic spending cuts of the sequester, and get America back on track to create ladders of opportunities for all!”

When times are tough and we budget for our families, moms and dads prioritize the needs of our kids. As an important member of the Budget Conference Committee we are asking you to do the same.

Kids are the silent victims of our last economic downturn. A shocking 16 million children live in poverty and 1 in 5 children live in families experiencing food insecurity.  We cannot keep balancing the budget on the backs of children while big corporations and the wealthy continue to receive outsized tax breaks. As a nation we should be investing in the education, healthcare, and future of our children.

Programs like Head Start, SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, and child care assistance help struggling families put food on the table, and care for their children. These programs are critical for children and families and must be protected. In addition, Emergency Unemployment Compensation must be extended in order to avoid 1.3 million unemployed workers, many with families, from being abruptly kicked off the program at the end of the year.

The current across-the-board budget cuts are harming our children now and limiting their future opportunities by reducing investments in their health and education. These unnecessary and harmful across-the-board cuts must be replaced with a budget that invests in kids, protects vulnerable families, and sets our country on a path to prosperity.

As you take on this important duty we ask that you please be sure that you use all the tools at your disposal to light a way forward for today’s children to be tomorrow’s leaders, and for our nation’s future economic success.
