Tell CA legislators: Protect children's health!

Each year, the Healthy Families Program provides approximately 875,000 children from low to moderate-income families the health coverage they need to stay healthy and succeed in school.

Unfortunately, Governor Brown’s budget proposal for next year would eliminate the Healthy Families Program altogether and shift all of the children now covered to the state’s Medi-Cal program by June 2013. Although these children would not lose coverage per se, this dramatic change may make it more difficult for these children to see a doctor when they need one by making increasing demand on the small number of doctors who currently treat children enrolled in Medi-Cal.

Dear California Legislator,
 
As a constituent and a member of MomsRising, I wanted to write to remind you that one of the most important investments we can make in our state, our economy and our future is ensuring that children have access to the health care they need to grow up healthy and strong. 
 
Unfortunately, Governor Brown’s budget proposal to eliminate the Healthy Families Program and transition all 875,000 children to Medi-Cal is a step in the wrong direction. The proposed transition would undermine children’s access to needed health care services and disrupt care for hundreds of thousands of children. 
 
California cannot risk making such a dramatic change until and unless the state knows that these changes will lead to kids getting comparable care to what they received in Healthy Families and nothing less. While we do need to address our state’s budget deficit, we shouldn’t do it at the expense of children’s health. 
 
I urge you to support an alternative proposal that’s much better for kids – moving only a small number of children – namely children in families with incomes below 133 percent of the federal poverty line, who are federally required to be in the Medi-Cal program by 2014.
