Dear member of Congress,
As the year comes to an end there are still a number of must-pass policies I, along with the families of America, expect you to address.
As your constituent I expect the following to happen before the end of the year:
- Pass a 5 year reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)—This bi-partisan-supported, vital health insurance program expired on September 30th and since then the health care of 9 million children who rely on the program has been in limbo. If it’s not passed by the time Congress leaves for their holiday break, many states have reported that they will start running out of money for the program by mid-January, and children will start losing health coverage.
- Pass a clean DREAM Act—Nearly 800,000 DREAMers received critical protections and work authorization under the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA recipients are upstanding members of our communities who came to this country as children. Everyone in the program has passed an extensive background check, paid a fee, and is now a student, service member or/and part of the workforce. Earlier this year President Trump rescinded DACA, putting at risk hundreds of thousands of young people. The DREAM Act is a strong bipartisan legislative solution that would allow young immigrants to continue living their American Dream with a path to citizenship. You must address this issue by the end of the year so DREAMers no longer need to live in fear of being deported from the one place they’ve ever called home.
- Pass funding to keep our government open and functioning—Continuing Resolutions are terrible ways to finance a government, but in the absence of a real budget we ask that you keep our government open by passing funding to keep our country safe, the programs our families rely on functioning, and employ the millions of people that work for the federal government. I urge Members of Congress to support increasing the spending caps to fund pivotal programs for the American people with parity between defense and non-defense funds, while opposing any flawed omnibus that includes poison pill policy riders.
I ask that you do the right thing and stand up for our families, our health care, and our economy by passing these important pieces of legislation by the end of the year.
