Dear Congress and Speaker Ryan,
This epidemic of gun violence needs to stop. More than 20,000 children are injured or killed by guns each year, more than 89 people die from gun violence every day, and just last week 49 people were gunned down in a LGBTQ+ safe space on Latinx night in #Orlando by a mass shooter using a military-style assault weapon with a high capacity magazine. We are deeply saddened by this senseless hate crime against the LGBTQ+ community and by the senseless violence every day across our county.
It’s time for gun policy reform NOW, this week. It’s time to save lives.
Before members of the U.S. House leave the Capitol for their districts, we call on you to schedule votes on the following measures:
- Expand background checks on gun sales and strengthening the background check system.
- Close the Charleston Loophole that allowed the Charleston shooter to purchase his weapons because his background check hadn’t been completed within three days, weapons he then used to kill nine people in their place of worship.
- Ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
We are so tired of gun violence dominating our headlines and devastating our families and communities. It doesn't have to be this way. It shouldn’t be this way. Please use your leadership and undertake comprehensive gun policy reform, starting with scheduling votes on gun safety now!
Sincerely,
