Dear Leader,
This tragic events at the Umpqua Community College in Oregon was a reminder of why we cannot pass any legislation relaxing the laws around carrying guns while on college campuses. Oregon is one of the few states where guns are permitted on campus, and we saw that guns on campus did not prevent violence. What we do know is that the presence of guns is much more likely to increase the chance of violence. A Harvard study showed that college students who own guns are actually more likely to drink to excess, and engage in aggressive and dangerous behavior after drinking, with almost two thirds of students with guns in the study reporting binge drinking.
I oppose HB4001/SB68 (and similar legislation), that would force Florida’s public university and college campuses to allow loaded, concealed guns anywhere on college campuses, including classrooms, dormitories, theaters, libraries, student health and counseling centers, and faculty and administration offices.
Florida's higher education officials are most qualified to determine the safety requirements for their campuses, including restricting guns only to certified law enforcement officers. And they oppose this legislation.
Allowing students, faculty, staff and all visitors to carry loaded, concealed handguns on campus will only create a volatile and unsafe environment for all Floridians.
I hope you’ll stand with the members of MomsRising in opposing this legislation.
