President Trump created a crisis in our country when he decided to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Through this decision, he snatched away the livelihood and aspirations of 800,000 young adults who have been here since they were children.

Dear Member of Congress:

Nearly 800,000 DREAMers received critical protections and work authorization under the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA recipients are upstanding members of our communities who came to this country as children. Everyone in the program has passed an extensive background check, paid a fee, and is now a student, service member or/and part of the workforce.

DACA has been operational for five years and is popular with the public, and enjoys the support of employers, educators, community leaders, and elected officials from both parties.

President Trump has rescinded DACA and placed 800,000 DREAMers at risk of losing their legal status.

Congress must take immediate action and pass legislation to protect DREAMers like MomsRising member Priscilla, who raised her younger siblings, studied hard, and now is a dedicated teacher in Texas. Destroying Priscilla’s dreams by taking away her legal status and ability to work would not only crush her and her siblings who rely on her, but also adversely impact her students and her entire school community.

A new report finds that, for every business day DACA renewals are put on hold, more than 1,400 jobs are lost. Indeed, ending DACA will remove tens of thousands of young people from the workforce, reducing our country’s GDP, saddling employers with unnecessary turnover costs and robbing our nation of $1.2 billion in tax revenue.

DREAMers are also fueling our economy. Almost 55 percent of DACA recipients have purchased a vehicle, and more than one in ten have purchased their first home. Further, 6% of DACA recipients have launched businesses that employ American citizens. There’s no question, passing the Dream Act is good for our economy.

Today more than ever before, we urge Congress to do right by DREAMers and pass legislation to protect the legal status of these young people who have contributed enormously to our communities and economy.
