Thank you, Governor Brown and CA Legislature, for investing in our littlest learners!

After hearing from thousands of MomsRising members like you, Governor Brown and the California legislature approved a budget that includes more than $300 million in investments to increase accessibility and improve quality for early care and education in our state.

Our work isn’t done, but these are steps in the right direction. Let’s thank Governor Brown and our California leaders for this important investment, and remind them that high quality and affordable early care and education is an issue of critical importance for moms, kids, and families in our state.

Dear Governor Brown and California Legislators,

On behalf of the thousands of MomsRising members who signed onto our petition in support of early learning and/or shared their personal stories with you, we want to thank you for approving a state budget that includes important investments and policy developments for our state’s early care and education system. We applaud your decision to put young children and their families front and center.

We are particularly pleased to see investments across three fundamentally linked priority areas: access, affordability, and quality. Increasing preschool and child care spaces, raising reimbursement rates for providers, expanding quality improvement efforts to programs serving babies and toddlers, and increasing early intervention services for young children with exceptional needs moves California closer to a robust, quality early learning system that supports the needs of children, families and providers across the state.

Your recognition that early learning is an essential initiative to combat poverty is critical to ensuring that California continues to support working families and our economy. The research is crystal clear – early childhood education is one of the best investments we can make to not only provide our youngest and most vulnerable children with quality early learning experiences they need to thrive in school and in life, but also to give their working families the opportunity to participate and succeed in our economy.

We are encouraged by your leadership and believe California is on the path to rebuilding the early care and education infrastructure needed to move families out of poverty, and to provide our earliest learners with opportunities that will support greater academic achievement and lifelong well-being. While there is clearly more work to be done to achieve a comprehensive early childhood system that meets the needs of children and families, these investments represent a significant step forward.

Thank you for standing strong for our youngest learners and their families – it is one of the best investments you can make for the future success of our state. We look forward to working with you and the Legislature to ensure California achieves the quality early learning system that our children and families deserve.
