Dear Presidential Candidates:
It’s painfully obvious that today’s workplace policies fail to meet the contributions and needs of working families in our nation. Our national "floor" for workplace policies is way too low. We want you to know that when we vote (and we do vote in large numbers!), we prioritize family economic security policies that boost our families, businesses, and economy like:
- Pay equity
- Childcare
- Paid Family & Medical Leave
- Healthcare
- Gun safety
- Racial justice
- Access to healthy food
- Fair treatment of immigrant families
- Earned sick days.
These are win-win-win policies that studies show boost our families, our businesses, and our economy. In fact, it’s long past time to move these policies forward particularly given that right now a quarter of young families live in poverty, childcare costs more than college, we are the only industrialized nation in the world without some form of paid family leave after a baby arrives, over 80% of low wage workers don’t have access to a single paid sick day, and women still aren’t making equal pay for equal work. In short, we have a modern economy, where women comprise 50% of the labor force for the first time in history, with workplace policies stuck in the Stone Ages.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Fortunately, solutions are possible.
It’s time to update our outdated policies for the good of our families, our businesses, and our national economy. Please share where you stand on these policy matters with the moms, dads, and working families of America.
