UPDATE - Former Texas officer Roy Oliver, 37, formerly of the Balch Springs police department, was indicted by a grand jury on one count of murder in the death of Jordan Edwards and four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon by a public servant.

No mother should ever have to fear that loved ones could be harmed at the hands of those charged with protecting them. Jordan Edwards was only 15 years old. He was an honor roll student, but as we know, no matter what kind of grades he had, he didn't deserve to die.

Once again, families and friends are mourning the death of a loved one senselessly killed by police. Police violence continues to grip our communities at a staggering rate causing trauma and fear. Young Black men are 21 times more likely to be killed by police than young White men. Police officers repeatedly see Black children as a threat for simply being Black, and it has to stop.

Three weeks ago, Jordan Edwards was killed by police in Balch Springs, Texas. The officer who shot Jordan has been fired from his Police Department. Citing several policy violations, the police department has fired him, but the road ahead is still long for Jordan Edwards' family--whose lives are forever changed by this tragedy--and for justice. That's why we need to support them in calling for the assignment of a special independent prosecutor to the case, as well as for a thorough investigation.

Dear District Attorney Faith Johnson,

This letter is to demand that you and your office move swiftly in seeking justice for Jordan Edwards and his family.

You did the right thing by quickly filing murder charges against Roy Oliver, the man who abused his duties as a police officer and killed Jordan Edwards, but that is only a first step towards justice for this young boy and his family. The next step is a conviction and to hold the entire Balch Springs police department accountable. It is not enough to just name the vicious crime that was committed by Roy Oliver. A young life was senselessly taken. We expect your office to do the right thing and ensure this case is fully carried out fairly and impartially.

It is long overdue for real police and prosecutor accountability. Too many times, Black people have been let down by a justice system that is deeply rooted in systemic racism and violence. It's time to change that. A special prosecutor must be appointed to see to it that the family receives the closure and justice they need. Your department must act with full integrity and transparency, and appoint a special prosecutor who will do the same.

We support the family in these additional demands:

1. Identify the officers other than Roy Oliver who interacted with Vidal Allen and the other three boys riding in the car; prosecute said officers to the fullest extent of the law if any criminal misconduct is found.

2. Release to the press and public all video evidence turned up by your investigators in this case. Support the release of all body camera video in the case generated by the Balch Springs Police Department and any video identified by the Dallas County Sheriff.

3. Support the release of all disciplinary records and complaints lodged against Roy Oliver during his employment with the Balch Springs Police Department.

4. Request an investigation of unequal and discriminatory policing in Balch Springs by the U.S. Department of Justice.
