Right now some members of Congress have decided that denying millions of Americans healthcare coverage is more important than access to education for children or jobs to tens of thousands of people.

In the coming days and weeks, Congress will be making decisions on the budget that will determine our nation’s tax and spending priorities.

When times are tough and we budget for our families, moms and dads prioritize the needs of our kids. We are asking you to do the same.

Kids are the silent victims of our last economic downturn. One out of every four children now live in poverty. And while children are 23% of our population, only 8% of our nation’s budget is spent on kids. In each of the last three years, the amount we invest in our kids has dropped! We cannot keep balancing the budget on the backs of children while big corporations and the wealthy continue to receive outsized tax breaks. As a nation we should be investing in the education, healthcare, and future of our children.

Programs, like Head Start, SNAP, WIC, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, and child care assistance help struggling families put food on the table, and care for their children. These programs are critical for children and families and must be protected.

The current across-the-board budget cuts are harming our children now and limiting their future opportunities by reducing investments in their health and education. These unnecessary and harmful across-the-board cuts must be replaced with a budget that invests in kids, protects vulnerable families, and sets our country on a path to prosperity.
