Over one month ago, Sybrina Fulton's teen-aged son, Trayvon Martin, was tragically shot and killed. It took three long days for Sybrina to find out what happened to her missing child. Now, she's been searching for justice for over a month. She needs our help.
On February 26th, an armed Sanford, FL neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman followed, confronted and shot Trayvon Martin AFTER being told by a 911 dispatcher to stay in his car until police arrive. Trayvon Martin was on his way home from buying candy at a store during halftime of the NBA All-Star game. Zimmerman, who admits to shooting the unarmed boy in the chest, called the police claiming Trayvon Martin looked “suspicious.”
Like many mothers, Sybrina thought the world of her child.
"Trayvon was our hero. At the age 9, Trayvon pulled his father from a burning kitchen, saving his life. He loved sports and horseback riding. At only 17 he had a bright future ahead of him with dreams of attending college and becoming an aviation mechanic. Now that’s all gone."
Support Trayvon Martin's mom, Sybrina Fulton's petition. It's been over a month and Trayvon's killer has yet to be arrested and arraigned.
The situation is unimaginably painful. And to make matters worse, instead of George Zimmerman being charged with a crime, Trayvon Martin is being criminalized and blamed for his own death by the media. On Friday, FOX News anchor, Geraldo Rivera shockingly implied that Trayvon Martin was partially responsible for his death because he was wearing a hoodie. Speaking on "Fox and Friends," Rivera said, "I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was."
Outrageous! Rivera and other commentators want us to believe that someone's attire can be responsible for their victimization. Sound familiar?
Women victims of sexual assault are frequently scrutinized about what their behavior and attire were prior to being assaulted. "Had she been drinking?" "Was she flirting?" And worse, "Was she wearing a mini-skirt ?!?"
We don't fall for victim blaming in cases of violence against women --and we aren't falling for it now!
Let's send a clear message to Sybrina Fulton that we support her in her quest for justice!
