On the day after Thanksgiving Samuel Oliver-Bruno, an immigrant who had been living in sanctuary at a Durham church for the last 11 months, arrived at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Morrisville for what was supposed to be a simple appointment to take Samuel’s fingerprints, a necessary step in his petition for deferred deportation so that he could remain in the country that has been his home for more than 22 years and care for his wife who is severely ill with Lupus and his son who just started his first year in community college.
Instead, Samuel was immediately detained by plainclothes ICE agents while he waited in line, dragged out the back door of the office to an unmarked minivan, and then taken to the Wake County Detention Center before being transferred without any warning to detention center in Georgia on Monday. Twenty-seven people, including parishioners at the church that had been offering him sanctuary, were arrested while singing hymns and surrounding the minivan in peaceful protest in attempt to protect their friend.
On Monday, his petition for deferred action was denied and an order for his removal issued. This is devastating for Samuel and his family and sets a dangerous precedent for immigrants currently in sanctuary in faith communities in North Carolina and other states.
He desperately needs us to raise our voices and demand that his order of removal be reversed so that his petition for deferred deportation can be given meaningful consideration.
Can you please join me in making a quick call to Senator Burr and the Atlanta field office for ICE, letting them know that churches are "sensitive locations", their sanctuary should be honored, and the petitions of immigrants like Samuel must be meaningfully considered?
We’ve got talking points you can use to make it easy and powerful. This is literally an issue of life or death for Samuel and his family. If deported, Samuel will be at high risk of death due to the public nature of his case, lack of medication for his diabetes, and his wife who is severely ill with Lupus needs him here to help care for her.
