Dear Senator,

As your constituent and one of over a million members of MomsRising, I strongly urge you to support The Paycheck Fairness Act and similar pay equity legislation in the 112th Congress.

Even though President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act in 1963, the pay gap has been narrowing by less than half a percent a year. That means at this rate the pay gap won’t close until 2057. Fifty-seven years from now!

American families simply can’t wait that long.  Our current economic crisis has made working moms’ earnings more important than ever to families’ economic security: Women are now the primary breadwinners in four out of 10 households.

Unfortunately, data recently released by the U.S. Census found that women who worked full-time, year round on average still made 23 cents less for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. (This marks no change from 2008’s wage gap and amounts to nearly $11,000 per year in lost earnings).  And, the wage gap for women of color in 2009 was even more staggering than for women overall. When Black and Hispanic women work full-time, year round, they only make 62 and 53 cents, respectively, for every dollar their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts earn.

Paycheck disparity is not just a woman’s issue. When women are victims of wage discrimination it hurts women, men, families and our national economic recovery.   Which is all the more reason we need our Senators to get on the right side of history, end wage discrimination, and support the Paycheck Fairness Act and similar pay equity legislation.
