Dear Member of Congress:
It is imperative that the United States of America center reproductive justice by addressing the maternal mortality crisis and restoring our full reproductive rights.
Our country has, by far, the highest rate of maternal mortality of all industrialized countries. We also have the dubious distinction of being one of only four countries that has increased restrictions on abortion access, since 1994, while over 55 countries have expanded access. It is unthinkable that rather than leading the way on these issues we are lagging far behind many countries, including all of those in the Global North.
These issues are not disconnected. Data analyses have shown that states with the strictest abortion bans have the worst maternal and infant outcomes. However, Black women, in particular, are bearing the brunt of the maternal health crisis with maternal mortality rates nearly double that of white women.
As a proud member of MomsRising, I urge you to vote YES on the following piece of legislation:
- The Black Maternal Health Momnibus, a comprehensive package of bills that includes significant investments in community-based programs to diversify the maternal health workforce, provide funding for tech to address racism and biases in screening and treatment, and expand mental health treatments and supports.
It is time to ensure that all birthing people in the United States have access to full reproductive health rights and positive maternal health outcomes. We can, and must, do better.
Sincerely,
