Dear Gov. Cooper,
Our state and local resources should not be used to fund enforcement at a border that’s thousands of miles away when pressing issues here in our home state require our time, attention, and resources.
We urge you to reject Representative Moore’s anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies. This kind of misdirection of our state resources will do nothing to strengthen our great state and, instead, will create an anti-immigrant environment for immigrants who are critical to our communities’ economic success.
In 2021, immigrants paid $8.4 BILLION in taxes. Immigrant entrepreneurs are opening businesses at higher rates than the U.S. population, creating $1.5 billion in business income across the state! In North Carolina, the immigrant labor force participation rate averaged 68.6% in 2022 compared to 59.8% for native-born. Moreover, it is misguided to blame our communities’ challenges on immigrants. In fact, studies show that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than non-immigrants, and U.S. citizens, not immigrants, are responsible for the overwhelming majority of smuggling across our borders.
Our state must invest in our community's future by using tax dollars to fund public education, affordable housing, after-school programs, and more initiatives that make North Carolina a place for all community members, regardless of immigration status and nationality, to thrive.
We urge you to do what you have always done and stand with our immigrant community in North Carolina.
Sincerely,
