Dear Member of Congress:
For too many parents, summer plans start months ahead of time, when parents have to figure out how to make child care work while schools are out for 10-12 weeks a year. Parents, with the burden falling disproportionately on moms, end up spending hours and hours devoted to researching what summer camps are in our neighborhoods, are easily accessible with our work schedule(s) and fit our budget.
Many parents across the country spend the summer trying to “make it work” sometimes through a patchwork of friends and family chipping in to lessen the child care load at home. Many times parents are forced to sign up for camps which are unaffordable (forcing many parents into debt by maxing out credit cards!) – and have to take time off or leave the workforce in the summer due to child care challenges. This only adds to the continual economic burdens too families already face.
There has to be a better way for our families. When there is no child care, parents, families, communities and businesses hurt. No one wins.
This issue is simply confirmation of what parents all over the country know – child care is essential. It is essential for parents to have safe and affordable summer child care options. We know parents need child care to work – all child care – including summer child care – is essential for our economy.
That’s why we need affordable child care (including summer and non-traditional hours care!) in our communities, so parents can work knowing their kids are learning and being taken care of in an enriching, safe and loving environment all summer long!
Sincerely,
