Dear Washington Lawmaker,
Our state currently faces an unprecedented budget crisis, and as your constituent, I urge you to balance the state’s budget with new, progressive revenue while protecting investments in child care, early learning, and education.
As moms, parents, and caregivers, we know it’s possible to budget for a brighter future in our state - one where Washington’s working people and small businesses can grow and succeed. But currently, our state’s tax structure is harming working families, small businesses, and our state’s ability to deliver core services. Right now, working families pay three times more of their income in local taxes than our wealthiest neighbors.
But we can fix that by passing new, progressive revenue, expanding the Working Families Tax Credit, reducing reliance on regressive property and sales taxes, and reforming B&O taxes for small businesses.
This past election, 2.3 million Washingtonians voted to uphold a tax on capital gains that generates funds for child care and education. Nearly two-thirds of Washington voters gave a ringing endorsement for new, progressive revenue.
Working families are feeling the crunch of high rents, mortgages, food costs, and more every single day. We cannot afford to pay more in taxes. But the ultra wealthy can. As your caucus drafts its proposed budget, we urge you to address the budget crisis head-on by ensuring the ultra-rich pay what they truly owe. Together, we can create a modern tax structure that meets the needs of Washington families and sets our state up for long term success.
Thank you for all that you do.
Sincerely,
