Dear Washington Lawmaker,
As moms, parents, and caregivers, we know it’s possible to budget for a brighter future in our state - one where Washington’s working people, children, and communities can succeed. But right now, working families pay three times more of their income in local taxes than our wealthiest neighbors.
As a Washington leader and lawmaker, you have the power to fix this by passing new, progressive revenue. Working families are feeling the crunch of high rents, mortgages, food costs, and more every single day. We cannot afford to pay more in taxes. But the ultra wealthy can.
In both the House and the Senate, we urge you to hold the line on new, progressive revenue. We stand with you and will fight with you to see this legislation passed, signed into law, and upheld if challenged.
Specifically, I'm writing in support of:
- In the Senate:
- SB 5797 - Enacting a tax on stocks, bonds, and other financial intangible assets for the benefit of public schools.
- SB 5796 - Enacting an excise tax on large employers on the amount of payroll expenses above the social security wage threshold to fund programs and services to benefit Washingtonians.
- SB 5794 - Adopting recommendations from the tax preference performance review process, eliminating obsolete tax preferences, clarifying legislative intent, and addressing changes in constitutional law.
- SB 5795 - Reducing the state sales and use tax rate.
- In the House:
- HB 2045 - Investing in Washington families by restructuring the business and occupation tax on high grossing businesses and financial institutions.
- HB 2046 - Creating fairness in Washington's tax by imposing a tax on select financial intangible assets.
Together, we're creating a modern tax structure that meets the current needs of working families across all Washington and sets our state up for long term success.
Thank you for all that you do.
Sincerely,
