Dear New York Lawmaker,
Our recent election in New York City has made something crystal clear: child care is a winning issue. Parents and advocates have been raising the alarm on the dire state of child care not only in New York, but across the state: it is too expensive, and often non-existent in our communities. The lack of adequate child care is hurting New York families and our state economy– it’s time to act.
Families in New York are struggling to find child care in their communities. The number of child care slots available does not meet the need, and it is estimated that 60 percent of New Yorkers live in a child care desert, with rural communities in upstate New York being the most impacted. Cost is also a pressing issue as New Yorkers face some of the highest child care costs in the country: anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000 for an infant or toddler, representing the highest expense for a family, often more expensive than rent or a mortgage. Child care workers are leaving the sector because compensation is too low, averaging about $38,000 a year, $20,000 less than the median wage in New York. We need to make big investments that address all these issues so that parents can work and kids can be taken care of in a safe and nurturing space and child care providers can earn life sustaining wages so they can take care of their families.
The New York City Mayor can’t be the only one focusing on child care– families across New York state, from Niagara Falls to Montauk, are counting on you! We need you to make universal child care a priority this legislative session so that families can afford to stay, live and thrive in the Empire State. You can make universal child care a reality for all New Yorkers.
Thank you for your commitment to making New York a place where all families can thrive.
Sincerely,
