Dear Representative,
As one of thousands of MomsRising members in New Hampshire, I’m writing to urge you to oppose CACR 12, a resolution that would place a constitutional amendment on the ballot to permanently ban all taxes on personal income.
Granite State families are struggling right now. Costs are rising, wages aren’t keeping up, and child care and housing are increasingly out of reach. Families are paying attention, and we understand that the pressure we’re feeling is the result of policy choices at both the state and federal level, not a lack of effort or personal responsibility.
CACR 12 does not address these challenges. It is not a solution to the rising cost of living or the strain on families. Instead, it would permanently take a major policy option off the table, regardless of future economic conditions or the needs of our state. Constitutional amendments should be used carefully, not to limit future lawmakers’ ability to respond to real challenges.
At the same time, the state has continued to reduce taxes for corporations and the wealthiest households, shifting more of the burden onto everyone else. Families notice this. We may be busy raising kids, but we understand when something doesn’t add up—we know when our kids hide their peas in their mashed potatoes.
Locking this kind of restriction into our constitution limits the ability of future lawmakers to respond to changing circumstances, including economic downturns, shifts in federal funding, or growing demands for investments in schools, child care, and health care. New Hampshire already relies heavily on property taxes, which creates inequities between communities and places a disproportionate burden on working families.
Granite State families need real solutions that lower costs and strengthen our communities, not policies that tie our hands and make it harder to respond in the future. For those reasons, I respectfully urge you to oppose CACR 12.
