It’s no surprise to parents that child care in North Carolina is in a crisis. High quality, affordable child care is hard to find – and it’s getting harder! From January to October 2025, North Carolina lost 280 child care programs.
Unless lawmakers act quickly to fund child care in this year’s budget, we will see more closures and less access to child care for families statewide. This impacts not only the children, but parents who are unable to work to support their families, businesses who rely on them, and our state’s economy.
The first step to stabilizing our state’s child care system and preventing more closures is urging state lawmakers to create a minimum statewide child care subsidy reimbursement rate floor.
Current subsidy reimbursement rates cover only about half the actual cost of care, leaving providers operating at a loss and forcing staff cuts, tuition increases, or closures. A rate floor moves rates closer to real costs, giving programs immediate financial stability so they can keep classrooms open and staffed.
But time is running out! Lawmakers say they are aiming to finalize a state budget by June 15. Which means they need to hear from you right now! Can you send a note to your lawmaker urging them to invest in stabilizing child care? We’ve made it easy!
If you have a personal story about child care’s impact on your ability to work, run a business, or foster your child’s development – please add it into the letter box! The more stories lawmakers hear about the impact of child care in their own communities, the greater the impact it will make.
