Tell YOUR CO legislators: We deserve champions who stand up for paid family leave!

Colorado #FAMLI ACT

Some bad news: Monday night (April 30th) on a close 3-2 vote, the Colorado Senate State, Veterans, and Military Affairs committee voted to kill the Colorado FAMLI Act (paid family and medical leave insurance) for this legislative session.

Now the good news: We made serious ground to win paid leave this session, and 38 Colorado legislators helped make that happen by voting in support of the FAMLI Act!

So now what? First, we start by thanking all the legislators who did the right thing this session. We need to let them know we’ve been paying attention, we support them, and we expect them to support paid leave again next session. At the same time we’ll also let those who opposed paid leave know that we’re not stopping this fight any time soon -- and they need to get on the right side of history.

Help us thank your own legislators who stood up for Colorado’s working families AND hold those who voted NO accountable for their vote against our communities!

We’ll be collecting your signatures and notes and delivering them to YOUR legislators over the next few weeks. If your legislator voted yes, we’ll make sure they know you thank them for standing with us all. If your legislator voted no, we’ll make sure they know that you’re disappointed in their vote, and we’ll all be watching them very closely next year.

Dear Colorado State Legislators,

When only 15% of all workers have access to paid family leave through their employer, it's a big problem for the health of our families and the health of our economy. The CO FAMLI Act (HB18-1001) would have ensured that all Colorado families could thrive in today's workplace and economy. And we were very disappointed that it didn't pass this session.

To those who voted YES on the FAMLI Act: THANK YOU! We've been watching, and we appreciate you standing up for working families in Colorado. We look forward to your continued support of the FAMLI Act in future years.

To those who voted NO on the FAMLI Act: We were incredibly disappointed to see you vote against the FAMLI Act and oppose paid leave for all Coloradans. We’re not stopping the fight for paid family and medical leave any time soon -- and we need you to get on the right side of history.

Nearly 1 in 4 mothers return to work within 10 days of giving birth and 1 in 5 retirees leave the workforce earlier than planned to care for an ill spouse or another family member. Many families end up cobbling together vacation time and sick days to cover time away from work for caregiving and then cross their fingers that nothing goes wrong.

We need a robust paid family and medical leave policy that checks ALL the boxes: It needs to be ACCESSIBLE to all workers, offer a MEANINGFUL length of leave, be AFFORDABLE for workers, employers, and the government, INCLUSIVE in defining family, and offer job PROTECTION. The Colorado FAMLI Act checks all of those boxes!

I hope you will agree that whether it’s to care for a newborn you swear already smiles, a mom who is ill, or a spouse battling cancer, being there for family is what matters. Colorado families shouldn't have to give up a paycheck to do it.
