We have one last shot to stop a terrible anti-immigrant, anti-public schools bill that passed the NC House Wednesday and is headed straight to Gov. Cooper’s desk, where he will have just 10 days to veto it.
This legislative session North Carolina anti-immigrant lawmakers have made a top priority out of attacks on North Carolina’s immigrant communities and the democratically elected sheriffs who refuse to do the work of ICE in holding and helping deport immigrants.
HB 10 will undermine our community's trust in law enforcement and deter immigrants from reporting sexual assault or domestic violence out of fear that doing so would put them at risk for deportation and separation from their families. HB 10 would increase racial profiling, risk separating families, and make all of our communities less safe.
This bill is also terrible for our state’s public schools. HB 10 takes nearly $500 million in funds that could be used to support our public schools and instead uses them to expand the state’s “Opportunity Scholarship” program. This program (also referred to as “school vouchers”) uses taxpayer funds to cover tuition costs for children attending private school at the expense of the 1.5 million children attending public schools in the state. Those funds could be used to hire and retain teachers, bus drivers, and teaching assistants, fund high quality pre-school and universal free school breakfasts and lunches to stave off child hunger in our state, provide resources for children with special needs, or support NC PreK classrooms – not to subsidize tuition for private schools. This is unacceptable.
Governor Cooper has twice vetoed similar legislation, in 2019 and again in 2022, and we’re counting on him to do it again. But he needs to hear from YOU that he must continue to stand up for NC’s immigrant communities, our public schools, and our kids and reject this extreme agenda.
Send your message now to Governor Cooper, telling him you appreciate his past support and that you are counting on him to veto HB 10 when it comes to his desk.
