Dear Member of Congress,
We are in a post-Roe public health emergency that is deeply impacting people already facing systemic health, racial, and economic discrimination. As one of over a million members of MomsRising, I am writing to ask that you support legislation that aims to protect access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion, mifepristone, and birth control.
The vast majority of the American public supports access to abortion: 69% of Americans believe that abortion should be legal within the first trimester and 85% of Americans believe that access to abortion is imperative in dire circumstances. This means that the majority of voters, even those that lean conservative, believe that abortion should be available to all who need it. When access to critical healthcare services is revoked, it sends a clear message to us that legislators do not care about going against substantive due process, our fundamental right to bodily autonomy and right to choose what we want to do with our lives.
Every day since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe, more people are being denied abortion care, making an already dire situation worse. These bans and attacks directly impact millions of mothers across the country–because six in ten people who have abortions are already mothers–and people who are only aiming to make the best decisions for the future of their lives and family’s lives. Everyday, parents and families are faced with unthinkable and extremely harsh realities.
What is more clear now than it’s ever been is that reproductive justice cannot wait. When we say “Reproductive Justice” we mean: Secure, affordable and accessible reproductive health care for all birthing people, including young women and mothers, Black and indigenous women, trans, queer and non-binary people, people who are undocumented, immigrants, and other communities of color that are marginalized and whose reproductive health care needs are too often ignored, leaving absolutely no one behind.
To champion the future, it’s vital to stand against discriminatory laws and bans that erode our rights. We ask that you not only intervene and block threats to crucial reproductive healthcare services but support legislation like the Women’s Health Protection Act that will prevent threats like these in the future. Let’s work together to secure our ability to make informed decisions about our health, our lives.
Thank you,
