Tell California: It's Time to Support Dual Language Education!

In our beautiful Golden State of California, an estimated 60% of children between birth- eight years are speaking more than one language at home and at school-- We are home to the largest population in the country of English Learners (EL) and Dual- Language Learners (DLL)!.

With the recent passage of Proposition 58, which eliminated the English only education mandate in schools, California is finally able to embrace our diversity by encouraging students to learn English as well as strengthen their home language-- but our early learning programs need both family support, a diverse, and a inclusive workforce - And our decision makers need to realize how much of an asset our diversity is.

Dear Legislator,

In our beautiful Golden State of California, an estimated 60% of children from birth through age eight are speaking more than one language at home and at school! To put it clearly, we are home to the largest population in the country of English Learners (EL) and Dual- Language Learners (DLL).

As your constituent and a MomsRising member, I’m urging you to embrace California’s diversity and invest in dual language programs! Dual language education can help close the opportunity gap before it starts while supporting our schools in embracing language and culture diversity to help all children and their families thrive. Research shows that dual language programs are the best way to increase student achievement for English Language Learners (ELL), while also improving education outcomes for native English speaking students. And students who know more than one language have exhibited increased emotional intelligence, stronger problem solving skills, and improved academic outcomes.

Right now OVER HALF of the world’s population is estimated to be bilingual or multilingual- with over 2 million kids in California learning more than one language at home. That means that building a bilingual workforce will help create opportunities for both monolingual and bilingual children by helping ensure California’s kids, families, and communities thrive in a global economy.
