Dear Member of Congress,
The data is in and the pandemic is having an outsized impact on women and moms, with women of color experiencing compounded health and economic harms due to structural racism. We call on our elected officials to take immediate action to help protect every family regardless of immigration status; to protect public health and our economy; and to put an end to the deadly COVID-19 virus.
As an immediate first step, Congress must act quickly and pass the American Rescue Plan. This comprehensive package includes vital emergency programs that our families, hospitals, small businesses, and local economies need right now, including: an extension of unemployment benefits, a childcare stabilization fund, direct payments, including for some mixed status families, critical expansions of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, aid to state, local, territory, and tribal governments, funding to support a scaled-up distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, protections from evictions and utility shut-offs, and increased funds for SNAP, school meals and other nutrition programs that are in unprecedented demand.
These emergency provisions are vital; and while you are working to quickly pass this package we are still mindful that more needs to be done to fix the holes in the system that caused so many families, especially women and children of color, to fall through the cracks in this pandemic. That is why we are calling on you to also turn your attention next to the ways we can build back better, including building a care infrastructure that allows families, businesses, and our economy to thrive. This includes passing permanent paid family and medical leave, childcare for all, permanent expansions of the EITC and Child Tax Credit, raising the minimum wage, and a pathway to citizenship for immigrant workers, who have been crucial in combating the pandemic.
Our families and economy continue to face a crisis and our elected leaders must treat it as such. We need your support and immediate action.
Thank you!
