It's time for Hawaii's minimum wage to catch up with living costs!

At $7.25 per hour, Hawaii’s minimum wage remains decades out of date. Despite the fact that Hawaii has one of the highest costs of living in the U.S., our state’s minimum wage is tied for the lowest in the country.

But that’s about to change. This week, Hawaii legislators are meeting to settle the final details for a bill to raise the state’s minimum wage. Whether they agree to a mild minimum wage increase – or a strong raise for all low-paid Hawaiians – depends on whether key legislators hear from you.

Back in March, the Hawaii Senate approved a bill to raise the state’s minimum wage to $9.25 per hour. That same month, the House of Representatives approved a separate bill that would raise the minimum wage to only $9.00 per hour.

This week, a committee of Senators and Representatives will meet to settle on a final bill. Given that Hawaii’s minimum wage has remained stuck at $7.25 per hour for six years at this point, it is crucial that the state’s minimum wage rise to $9.25 per hour to catch up with the cost of living and ensure that work provides a path out of poverty for the state’s lowest-paid workers.

Contact Senate President Donna Mercado Kim and Senator David Ige and let them know that this is no time for compromise – the people of Hawaii want a strong minimum wage at $9.25 per hour.

Dear Senate President Donna Mercado Kim and Senator David Ige,

We write to express our strong support for raising Hawaii's minimum wage to $9.25.

Raising the minimum wage will boost economic growth and spur consumer spending, which will accelerate the post-recession recovery in Hawaii:

  • Increasing the minimum wage to $9.25 per hour will mean a raise for 74,000 workers in Hawaii.
  • As these workers begin to spend their earnings on basic expenses, consumer demand will rise by $54 million in Hawaii, generating new growth and supporting the creation of 470 full-time jobs.
  • Nearly 70 percent of all low-wage workers in the U.S. are employed at large companies with over 100 employees, and these corporations – such as Walmart or McDonalds – are earning strong profits today and can afford higher wages.

Across the state, 52,000 children have a parent who would see a raise if the minimum wage were increased to $9.25 per hour.

We, as members of MomsRising.org with over a million members nationwide, are counting on you to make sure that Hawaii raises its minimum wage to $9.25 per hour this year. It is the right thing to do.

Sincerely,
