Dear member of Congress:
As one of over 1.8 million members of MomsRising, I urge you to increase your support for efforts to address maternal mental health.
Maternal mental health conditions, like postpartum depression and anxiety, are the most common complications of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting 800,000 women in the US each year. Yet approximately 75% of women report going untreated. The abysmal rates of diagnosis and effective treatment contribute to making suicide and overdose the leading causes of death in the first year after a baby is born.
Sadly, as with other health issues, maternal mental health disparities persist. Black women are twice as likely to experience maternal mental health conditions but half as likely to receive treatment.
We urge you to increase funding for Fiscal Year 2027 for two maternal mental health lifelines that help new mothers and babies thrive:.
- The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline
- The Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Program
The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline (1-833-TLC-MAMA), provides 24/7 voice, text, and chat support and resources to mothers and families impacted by maternal mental health conditions. Since its launch in May 2022, the Hotline has helped over 90,000 help-seekers. I am requesting that the Hotline receive $10 million in federal funding for Fiscal Year 2027.
The Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders (MMHSUD) Program, provides grants to states for maternal mental health programs that provide education, consultation, and resources to healthcare providers who support mothers. This program enables more frontline healthcare providers to screen and treat maternal mental health conditions, helping more mothers get the care they need. I am requesting that this program receive $14.5 million in federal funding for Fiscal Year 2027.
Please support and fund efforts to help stop the maternal mental health crisis in America.
Sincerely,
