Dear Member of Congress:
We thank you for officially recognizing Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week. I am, as one of over a million members of MomsRising, reflecting on how prevalent maternal mental health issues are, while recognizing that the continued widespread attacks on our reproductive freedoms are only exacerbating the suffering of women and worsening the mental health of women, mothers, and birthing people.
Maternal mental health conditions, like postpartum depression and anxiety, are the most common complications of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting 800,000 women in the US each year. These numbers can only increase given that maternal mental health and access to reproductive health services, including abortion, are interconnected. The fact is, most people who get an abortion (6 out of 10) have already given birth. And recent data has shown an increase in depression and anxiety symptoms in states where abortion bans are in place.
Women living in states with limited access to abortion services face a myriad of issues -- life-threatening medical risks and the criminalization of abortion and miscarriage being the most crucial hardships for many.
These conditions worsen maternal mental health and reflect a deep injustice in our healthcare system.
I come to you asking that while you serve as a champion of maternal mental health, you also fight to restore and expand reproductive freedoms for women, moms, and birthing people.
Sincerely,
