Dear Lawmaker:
As a member of MomsRising, I’m writing to urge you to support the Building Understanding of Movement in Pregnancy (BUMP) Act that will help ensure every North Carolina family has the knowledge and care they need for a healthy pregnancy.
Stillbirth remains a persistent and preventable public health crisis in North Carolina. Each year, an average of 723 babies are stillborn and that number has not meaningfully improved in over a decade. Research shows that at least 1 in 4 of these losses could be prevented with better awareness, timely response, and consistent care.
We can, and must, do better for moms and babies. The BUMP Act will:
- Empower Parents with Tools that Work: It funds the "Count the Kicks" campaign, giving parents evidence-based tools to track movement and recognize when a baby might be in distress.
- Standardize Life-Saving Care: It ensures our healthcare providers are trained to listen and act immediately when a mom shares that something doesn’t feel right.
- Fight for Birth Equity: It focuses resources on the communities hit hardest by this heartbreak, including our Black families, who are nearly twice as likely to experience stillbirth, to ensure every family has the support they need to thrive.
No family should have to face the preventable loss of a child. Please support the BUMP Act and help ensure that more North Carolina families get to bring their babies home.
Sincerely,
