Dear member of Congress:
I’m joining MomsRising, an organization of more than one million moms across the country, to strongly urge the removal of Section 589 in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The section, titled “Rights of parents of children attending schools operated by the Department of Defense Education Activity,” would impose burdensome and unnecessary requirements in schools operated by the Department of Defense Education – and is not supported by the majority of parents in America. Section 589 would make our schools less safe and effective while doing nothing to boost education outcomes.
We deeply appreciate and value our nation’s educators; and this section would damage the parent-teacher relationship with hostile reporting and commenting requirements. It could also facilitate the banning of books, particularly those that provide the much-needed viewpoints of Black, brown, AAPI, religious-minority, and LGBTQ+ communities. And, we believe that this section would also undercut efforts to create safe environments for all children by undermining crucial public health data. Finally, this section is an unnecessary burden that would only serve to distract school administrators and educators from the most crucial work of teaching and supporting our country’s children.
America's moms want extremist policies out of our schools – and instead for Congress to support schools, as well as put in place a care infrastructure (child care, paid family and medical leave, fair pay, and elder care) that will allow all families to succeed. Again, we strongly urge the removal of Section 589 in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
