NH: Help Moms & Babies Get the Diapers They Need

Diapers aren’t optional, but for too many New Hampshire families, they’re unaffordable. Babies can go through 10–12 diapers a day, and that adds up fast when the cost of everything else is already sky-high, especially for families who are already stretched thin.

What’s worse is programs like SNAP and WIC don’t cover diapers, even though babies need them to stay healthy and most child care providers require families to supply them. That means diaper need can quickly turn into missed child care, missed work, and even more stress. This is about health, work, and dignity.

HB 1798 would let Medicaid cover diapers during a baby’s first year of life so families can meet a basic need with dignity.

Send a message to the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee today, before they vote on Thursday, January 28.

As a New Hampshire resident and one of thousands of MomsRising members across the state, I’m writing to urge you to support HB 1798, an act relative to the coverage of diapers under the state Medicaid plan.

Diapers are not optional. They are essential for babies’ health and for families’ stability. But diapers are expensive, and too many New Hampshire families are already doing everything they can just to keep up with the cost of living.

When families can’t afford enough diapers (often called diaper need), parents may delay diaper changes to make their supply last longer. This can lead to painful rashes, infections, and other preventable health issues. Diaper need also affects child care access and work stability, since many child care providers require families to supply diapers each day. When a parent can’t send their child with diapers, it can mean missed child care, missed work, and lost wages, which only makes it harder to afford diapers the next week. That cycle hurts babies and working parents alike.

HB 1798 would be a meaningful step forward by allowing Medicaid coverage for diapers during a baby’s first year of life. This is a common sense policy that supports infant health, maternal wellbeing, and economic stability for working families across the Granite State. Please support HB 1798 and vote Ought to Pass.
