Dear member of Congress:
We urge you to take immediate action to reinstate the National Law Enforcement Accountability Database (NLEAD), a federal database that tracked law enforcement misconduct and helped ensure that officers with histories of abuse, excessive force, discrimination, or harassment could not easily move between agencies without accountability.
The decision by the Trump Administration and the Department of Justice to decommission NLEAD weakens public trust and undermines public safety. Without this database, federal agents, including those in ICE and Border Patrol, can operate without meaningful oversight, and officers with histories of misconduct can continue to impact communities, including immigrant families, Black and Brown neighborhoods, and everyday Americans simply trying to live their lives with dignity and safety.
Across Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, and other cities, we are already seeing the consequences. Families have lost loved ones. Immigrant parents are separated from their children. Communities are living in fear rather than feeling protected. These outcomes are precisely what accountability mechanisms like NLEAD were meant to prevent. Our families deserve better. Our communities deserve accountability. Our nation deserves justice realized, not erased.
Thank you,
