Dear Representative,
As your constituent and one of thousands of MomsRising members in New Hampshire, I am writing to urge you to oppose SB 33, a harmful book-ban bill that would invite censorship into our schools.
SB 33 would require every district to adopt a broad “materials” policy and create a new complaint process that allows parents or guardians to challenge anything labeled “harmful,” “age-inappropriate,” or “offensive.” It is not limited to books. That could mean challenges to maps, sculptures, school plays, posters, web pages, videos, and more.
Let me be clear: this bill is not about strengthening or protecting parents’ rights. Parents already work with teachers and school leaders to review materials for their own children. SB 33 does the opposite. It takes power away from local communities and imposes a one-size-fits-all process that would drain schools of limited time and resources, especially in smaller and rural districts.
Earlier this year, the Governor vetoed a similar bill because families already have local tools and because the state should not police “literary value” or invite costly, politicized complaints. SB 33 may look different, but the impact is similar. It invites censorship and narrows the stories and lessons available to students.
Granite Staters value local control, individual responsibility, and educational freedom. This bill undermines all three. Please vote NO on SB 33 and stand with parents, teachers, and our children’s right to an honest, well-rounded education free from censorship.
