Say NO to funding for family separation and imprisonment

As many of us were winding down holiday celebrations, we were horrified to see photos of our government tear gassing mothers and toddlers who are seeking asylum at our border. The cruelty is breathtaking. Our country has the capacity and policies in place to process asylum seeking families in a humane manner. Instead, the Trump administration is asking Congress for more money so that they can implement increasingly cruel practices to target immigrants both inside the U.S. and at our border.

Tell the U.S. Congress to stand up against these cruel practices and to hold the Trump administration accountable by not financing the administration’s cruelty to immigrant families!

Dear Members of Congress,

As you consider spending levels for the rest of fiscal year 2019 (FY19), we urge you to reduce harmful and rapidly expanding immigration enforcement funding.

Nearly 45,000 people per day are held in detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) - an unprecedented high and resulting in spending levels above what Congress appropriated in FY18.

Even considering funding increases for Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), and ICE while children remain separated and while the administration contemplates turning refugee families away from the border on the basis of nationality is tantamount to rubber stamping this administration’s despicable actions.

Additionally, the wall is not just a hateful symbol of exclusion, it will kill wildlife by interfering with the migration patterns and access to food and water of wildlife, it will cause dangerous flooding; causing millions of dollars in damages to the environment and local businesses and endangering the lives of border residents and stomp on the rights of private landowners resulting in a large government land grab that strips private landowners of their lands.

America's families do not want our tax dollars, that could be used to improve our schools, childcare, and health care, being used to carry out the anti-immigrant policies of the Trump administration.

Congress must stop rewarding ICE and CBP for abhorrent detention conditions and opaque overspending, and instead reduce immigration detention funding, exert oversight over detention practices, and direct the administration to restore less costly, more efficient, and humane community-based alternatives to detention.
