Dear Pennsylvania Leader:
I am writing to ask you to support the Pennsylvania Momnibus package of legislation, that will help end the crisis of Black moms dying at disparate rates across commonwealth from preventable, pregnancy-related complications.
The United States is currently the most dangerous place to give birth in the developed world, with major racial disparities where Black women lose their lives at 3 to 4 times the rate of white women due to maternity-related causes, independent of age, economic background, or education, a fact that has done unchanged for several decades.
This is why the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus’s Momnibus package will make a difference. It is the most comprehensive legislative effort yet to address the crisis of Black maternal mortality. It includes:
- HB 1608: Extends Medicaid coverage for double services and establishes a Doula Advisory Board to set standards and accreditation requirements for doulas.
- HB 1618: Requires health insurance to cover doula services.
- HB 2097: Requires Medicaid to cover blood pressure monitors for pregnant and postpartum enrollees.
- HB 2138: Requires health insurance to cover blood pressure monitors for pregnant and postpartum enrollees.
- HB 2136: Designates maternal health deserts to target investments in maternal health care services.
- HB 2127: Enhances access to mental health care services for pregnant and postpartum patients.
- HB 2140: Requires health-related boards within the Department of State to complete implicit bias training as part of continuing education requirements.
- HB 2137: Establishes the Maternal and Newborn Supply Kit Program to distribute essential resources to new moms and parents.
We want moms to go home with their babies and watch their children and families thrive. Too many families and communities have already born the brunt of needlessly losing moms to preventable causes. We urge you to support the Momnibus to comprehensively address the commonwealth's Black maternal health crisis and save moms.
Sincerely,
