Dear President Biden, Vice President Harris, Speaker Johnson, Majority Leader Schumer, Leader Jeffries, and Leader McConnell,
The United States is one of only seven countries in the world with no guaranteed form of paid leave. Without this widely supported and much needed policy, families will be forced to make impossible choices: working to earn a paycheck or caring for themselves or loved ones.
In 1993, thirty one years ago, Congress finally passed the Family and Medical Leave Act, guaranteeing unpaid, job protected leave for serious medical conditions and for family care when a new child arrives or when a serious health crisis strikes. This law has benefitted families, boosted moms, businesses and our economy but it was only meant to be a first step. It's time, past time for the paid leave that every working person and family deserves.
Only 27 percent of workers in the United States have access to paid family leave through their jobs. And even more shocking, here in America, one in four people who have given birth returned to work within two weeks—bleeding, sleep-deprived, and often still injured.
Today we ask you to commit to passing the country's first permanent paid leave program. The nation urgently needs a program that covers all workers, no matter the size of their employer, or if they are self-employed or work part time.
Thank you,
