Tell PA Leaders: We need paid family & medical leave!

Pennsylvania workers and families urgently need comprehensive paid family and medical leave.

No one should have to choose between caring for themselves or a loved one, and keeping their job. In times of crisis, and every day.

Join us to urge Pennsylvania legislators to advance the Family Care Act, bi-partisan legislation that would bring comprehensive paid leave to Pennsylvania. Leaders are voting this week.

Paid family/medical leave is more than just maternity and paternity leave. It enables working people to take a meaningful length of leave to care for themselves if a critical health crisis arises, for a family member with a serious illness, or for the arrival of a new child. We need a real paid leave plan that is accessible to all working people, covers all families, and is affordable, job-protected, cost-effective, and sustainable for workers, employers, and taxpayers.

Without access to paid leave, a full 1-in-5 people are forced to leave the workforce entirely or earlier than planned because they have to take care of a critically ill family member, which in turn can have a disastrous effect on retirement savings, especially for women. This of course, also hurts businesses and our economy.

I'm writing to urge you to advance the Family Care Act. Our families, our businesses, and our economy need a comprehensive paid family & medical leave program. We need a program that enables working people to take a meaningful length of leave to care for themselves if a critical health crisis arises, for a family member with a serious illness, or for the arrival of a new child. We need a plan that is accessible to all working people, covers all families, and is affordable, job-protected, cost-effective, and sustainable for workers, employers, and taxpayers.

And we need it now.

The Family Care Act recognizes things we already know to be true: family takes care of family and people need the flexibility to focus on their health. By establishing a paid family medical leave program in Pennsylvania, the Family Care Act will allow:

Family members to provide critical care for elderly or disabled loved ones;
Parents to be there for their children following birth/adoption/foster placement or care for their child during an illness;
Small businesses to give their employees a level of flexibility when they are not able to provide paid time off or health insurance.

Care is care is care. Whether it’s to care for a newborn you swear already smiles, a mom who is severely ill, or a spouse battling cancer, being there for family is what matters. No one should risk a paycheck when an urgent and unexpected family matter arises.
